When a seedling first sprouts its germinal shoot is undifferentiated. Later the shoot will differentiate into a stem and a shoot-but which of these develops the most will depend on many factors such as the amount of light the shoot receives. Similarly society has the potential to develop in any of many ways. It can develop in the direction of catastrophe or in the direction of progress. The pathway of social development taken depends on the quality of the degree of responsibility on all levels exhibited by the members of that society. The more a society fills up with irresponsible people, the harder it will come for those who do want to be responsible to maintain their virtues. The biggest casuality, however, on the collective level, will be the peace and harmony of that society.
